The Egyptian Obelisk: Ancient Egypt in the Heart of Istanbul

Rising dramatically from Sultanahmet Square, the Obelisk of Theodosius connects modern Istanbul to the world of ancient Egypt. Known as the Egyptian Obelisk, this monument is one of the oldest structures still standing in the city. Carved more than 3,500 years ago and later re-erected by Roman emperors, it tells a story of conquest, power, and imperial ambition across civilizations.

From Pharaohs to Roman Emperors
Egyptian craftsmen carved the obelisk from red granite during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III in the 15th century BCE. They originally raised it at the Temple of Karnak in Luxor to honor the sun god Amun-Ra and celebrate royal authority. In 390 CE, Roman emperor Theodosius I ordered the obelisk transported to Constantinople as a symbol of imperial dominance. Engineers cut the monument in half to make the journey possible, and workers erected the surviving upper section in the Hippodrome of Constantinople.

Imperial Propaganda in Stone
The obelisk’s base reveals as much history as the monument itself. Roman sculptors carved detailed reliefs showing Emperor Theodosius watching chariot races from the imperial box, surrounded by court officials and guards. Other panels depict the complex engineering used to raise the obelisk, transforming the monument into a permanent advertisement of Roman technical skill and authority. While the hieroglyphs on the shaft glorify an Egyptian pharaoh, the base firmly anchors the monument in Byzantine political life.

The Obelisk in the Hippodrome Then and Now
In antiquity, the Egyptian Obelisk stood at the center of the Hippodrome’s spina, surrounded by statues, columns, and racing chariots. Today, it remains one of the best-preserved monuments from the arena. Visitors can still admire its original hieroglyphs, its towering height of nearly 19 meters, and its marble pedestal, which continues to stand exactly where emperors once displayed their power before massive crowds.
