Deniz Karagözoğlu: A Bilingual Guide to Istanbul and Türkiye

A Guide Between Cultures

Born in London and raised in Fethiye, Deniz Karagözoğlu brings a naturally international perspective to every journey he leads. English is his first language, while Turkish became part of his life through school, friendships, daily life, and growing up in Türkiye. Today, he is fully fluent in both languages and moves comfortably between two cultures.

This mixed background shapes the way Deniz guides. He understands the questions international travellers ask, the details that may be unfamiliar, and the kind of context that turns a beautiful place into a meaningful experience. At the same time, he has spent his life in Türkiye, surrounded by its landscapes, traditions, humour, food, history, and everyday rhythms.

For Deniz, guiding is not about giving a memorised speech. It is about creating a real connection between visitors and the place they are exploring.

From Fethiye to Istanbul

Growing up in Fethiye gave Deniz an early connection to the Mediterranean coast, ancient Lycia, and the slower rhythm of life in southwestern Türkiye. It is a region where mountains meet the sea, ancient cities appear along walking trails, and history is woven into the landscape.

Over time, his work brought him across the country and eventually to Istanbul: a city with a completely different energy, scale, and historical depth. From the calm coastal paths of Lycia to the ferries, markets, mosques, backstreets, and imperial monuments of Istanbul, Deniz has developed a broad understanding of Türkiye’s regional differences.

He enjoys showing travellers that Türkiye is never just one story. It is a country of many cultures, landscapes, empires, communities, and ways of life—and each region deserves to be experienced on its own terms.

Education, Experience, and an Ongoing Curiosity

Deniz studied Tourist Guiding at Anadolu University, where he built a strong academic foundation in Türkiye’s cultural heritage, history, and tourism.

For around a decade, he has worked in tourism both on the ground and behind the scenes. Alongside his studies and early career in the Mediterranean region, Deniz worked in tourism agency operations and took part in daily excursions. This gave him valuable experience in the reality of travel: planning routes, managing timing, understanding guest needs, working with local partners, and adapting when a day does not go exactly as expected.

His experience is both academic and practical. Deniz knows the historical background of the sites he visits, but he also understands what makes a journey comfortable, engaging, and well paced. His long-standing connections in the tourism world help him create travel experiences that feel smooth, personal, and thoughtful.

History is not something Deniz leaves behind at the end of a tour. He reads widely, writes blogs, follows historical research, and continues exploring the places he guides in. Every city, archaeological site, old neighbourhood, church, mosque, market, and coastal trail offers another question to follow.

Istanbul Tours: Beyond the Postcard

Istanbul is Deniz’s home base and one of the most rewarding cities to explore with him. It is a place of layers: Byzantine and Ottoman, European and Asian, imperial and everyday, energetic and unexpectedly intimate.

For first-time visitors, he can design a classic Old Town route through Sultanahmet, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, Basilica Cistern, Topkapı Palace, and the Grand Bazaar. But Istanbul is much more than its famous monuments.

Deniz also leads Istanbul cat tours, local food tours, heritage walks, Byzantine and Ottoman tours, cycling tours, Princes’ Islands trips, and off-the-beaten-path explorations. These routes can include historic neighbourhoods, overlooked sites, quiet streets, local markets, ferry rides, everyday food stops, and significant places that are often missed by standard itineraries.

Whether a guest is interested in architecture, history, religion, food, photography, local life, or simply wandering through the city at a relaxed pace, Deniz shapes the experience around what matters most to them. He is warm, approachable, and attentive to the atmosphere of a group, adjusting the rhythm and focus of the day to meet guests’ interests and expectations.

Tours Across Anatolia and Türkiye

Deniz’s work reaches far beyond Istanbul. Across Anatolia, he guides journeys through ancient landscapes, coastlines, walking trails, archaeological sites, sacred places, battlefields, and winter mountains.

His tour options include Lycian Way walking tours, ancient Lycia tours, Aegean and Mediterranean journeys, Seven Churches tours, Ephesus and House of the Virgin Mary visits, Gallipoli and Çanakkale tours, Troy tours, and İznik—ancient Nicaea—tours. During winter, he also offers Bursa and Uludağ ski tours.

Each destination offers a different side of Türkiye. On the Lycian coast, the focus may be ancient ruins, mountain paths, and the Mediterranean. In the Aegean, it may be archaeology, early Christian history, village life, and local food. In Gallipoli and Troy, history is felt in the landscape itself. In Bursa and Uludağ, Ottoman heritage and winter nature come together.

These are only some of the experiences Deniz offers. From a single day in Istanbul to a longer journey through Türkiye, he can create an itinerary that brings together history, food, culture, nature, archaeology, and local life.

Private and Group Tours Designed Around You

Some travellers arrive with a detailed plan; others only know that they want to experience Türkiye in a more meaningful way. Deniz works with both.

For groups, tours can be designed around a shared interest, whether that is history, gastronomy, faith, architecture, photography, active travel, or simply enjoying time together. For couples, families, solo travellers, and small private groups, each itinerary can be designed from scratch.

The goal is always the same: to create a journey that feels natural, well organised, and genuinely memorable.

More Than a Tour

A day with Deniz can include the great monuments of Istanbul, but it can also include the conversations, unexpected details, local flavours, and quiet moments that stay with travellers longest.

Whether the journey begins in Istanbul, on the Lycian coast, among the ancient cities of the Aegean, or in the winter mountains of Uludağ, Deniz brings knowledge, practical experience, bilingual ease, and a genuine love of Türkiye to every route.
